Keep the Olympic Spirit Alive

Now the torch has passed through Tamworth, local residents are being encouraged to keep the Olympic Spirit alive.

Last November the Olympic organising committee, LOCOG, launched a grassroots programme inviting the UK’s ‘Local Leaders’ to step forward and start planning local celebrations to celebrate the spirit of the games.

Tamworth Borough Council is encouraging anyone who is looking to celebrate the London 2012 Games in Tamworth to sign up to become a Local Leader to continue to celebrate the Olympic games on every street.

Cllr Robert Pritchard, Deputy Leader of the Council, said:

“Similar to the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics is a great opportunity for local people to come together and celebrate Great Britain.

“The Local Leaders website contains advice, support and downloads to help you plan Olympic themes events from BBQs to street parties. Tamworth Borough Council put in a lot of work to secure the torch visit to Tamworth and we want to keep the Olympic spirit going throughout the Olympic and Paralympic games.”

Ideas put forward from communities across the UK include Garden for the Games, hosting a sports quiz, party at home by throwing an Opening Night In and Super Saturday, the big medal-winning weekend during the Games. These are just some of the types of events residents can hold in Tamworth.

Anyone wishing to register can visit to sign up.
